Popcorn ceilings scraped flat and paint-ready in Calgary

Popcorn ceilings scraped flat and paint-ready in Calgary

Mount Pleasant is an NW Calgary community, where dated popcorn and stipple ceilings get scraped and skimmed to a modern flat finish We scrape, skim and refinish the ceiling flat and paint-ready. We cover Mount Pleasant and every all of Calgary community, 7 days a week.

What affects the cost of popcorn ceiling removal in Calgary?

Ceiling area, height and access in Calgary homes

The main cost drivers for popcorn ceiling removal in Calgary are total ceiling area, ceiling height (standard 8-foot ceilings vs. vaulted or cathedral ceilings common in NW and SW Calgary homes), how many skim and sanding coats the surface needs to come fully flat, and whether you want smooth or knockdown re-texture. A straightforward main-floor removal in a Calgary bungalow takes a day. An open-concept main floor with a vaulted section over the living room takes longer to set up and skim.

Pre-1990 stipple and asbestos in Calgary

Calgary saw a large wave of new home construction in the 1970s and early 1980s across Rundle, Pineridge, Lakeview, Haysboro, Glendale, Marlborough and dozens of other established neighbourhoods. Stipple applied before the early 1990s can contain asbestos in the binder or texture compound. If your home was built before 1990, we recommend an asbestos test before removal — a single bulk sample takes a few days and costs less than a hundred dollars. We will point you to a certified lab and schedule around the result. A pre-1990 Mount Pleasant ceiling stays untouched until testing confirms it is safe. Mount Pleasant spans a range of build eras, so what is behind the wall differs street to street.

Our Calgary popcorn ceiling removal process, step by step

Full dust containment before we scrape a single line in Calgary

Scraping popcorn is dusty work. Before we touch the ceiling in any Calgary home, we mask doorways with poly sheeting, cover the floor with drop sheets and protect any light fixtures. Most homeowners do not realize how much fine dust a scrape job creates until they have lived through one done without proper containment. We contain it, and we clean up before we leave.

Skim coat, drying time and the sanding pass on Calgary ceilings

Once the ceiling is scraped clean, we repair any cracks or seams that show up. After scraping, a thin full-ceiling skim of compound smooths out the residual roughness on Mount Pleasant jobs. It has to dry completely before sanding. Skipping that drying time is the most common reason Calgary skim coats crack or show texture through paint. We do not rush it. Final sanding is done with a pole sander to leave the ceiling dead flat and ready for paint. Mount Pleasant spans a range of build eras, so what is behind the wall differs street to street.

Smooth ceiling vs. knockdown re-texture in Calgary homes

Which finish works best in your Calgary home?

After scraping, you have two options in most Calgary homes: smooth Level 5 finish or knockdown re-texture. Smooth is the premium choice — it shows light beautifully but demands a very clean skim and sanding job, which is why hiring a mudding and taping specialist matters. It works especially well in updated SW and NW Calgary homes where the main-floor renovation includes new LED lighting and open-plan ceilings.

Knockdown re-texture in Calgary

Knockdown gives you a lightly textured ceiling — flattened random peaks, similar to what you see in most post-1995 Calgary new builds. Small surface flaws disappear under knockdown, and it holds paint well in Mount Pleasant. It is faster to achieve than a perfect smooth finish and it still looks clean and modern compared to the old stipple. We match the knockdown pattern to what is already on adjoining walls or ceilings when you want the rooms to look continuous. In Mount Pleasant we see everything from original finishes to recent renovations on the same block.

Common popcorn ceiling removal situations across Calgary

Pre-sale stipple removal in established Calgary neighbourhoods

One of the most common calls we get is from Calgary homeowners preparing to sell. Real estate agents consistently flag stipple ceilings as a first impression issue in older NW, NE, SW and SE Calgary homes. Buyers price it in as a discount. Removing the stipple, skimming flat and leaving it paint-ready costs a fraction of what buyers subtract at negotiation. Most pre-sale removal jobs in established Calgary neighbourhoods are completed in one or two days, well within a typical listing-prep window.

Main-floor renovations triggering ceiling work in Calgary

The second most common situation: a Calgary homeowner pulls open a main floor — new kitchen, new lighting, open-concept change — and realizes the stipple ceiling is now the worst-looking surface in the room. We time these jobs around the renovation schedule, come in after the construction dust settles and before the painter. We coordinate with painters and contractors across Calgary regularly.

Why Calgary homeowners choose Emplastrum for popcorn ceiling removal

Mudding and taping is our core skill — the finish is what we are known for

Most general drywall contractors treat the skim coat as a quick add-on. In Mount Pleasant the finish is not an add-on — skim, sand and final surface are the job. We are a mudding and taping specialist, and a perfectly flat, paint-ready ceiling is the standard we hold every Calgary job to. The same skill that lets us match 30-year-old knockdown texture on a drywall repair is what gives our Calgary popcorn removal skim coats the flat finish that holds up under new lighting.

FAQ — Popcorn Ceiling Removal Mount Pleasant

Popcorn Ceiling Removal Mount Pleasant: your questions answered

Do you cover all of Calgary for popcorn ceiling removal?
Yes — we cover all four Calgary quadrants, Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks and surrounding communities, 7 days a week. The only exception is downtown high-rise towers, which require building-management access and working-at-heights permits we do not carry.
Do pre-1990 Calgary ceilings need an asbestos test before removal?
Yes, we recommend it. Stipple and popcorn texture applied before the early 1990s can contain asbestos in the binder compound. A single bulk-sample test from a certified Calgary lab costs under $100 and takes a few business days. You will get the Mount Pleasant process explained and a schedule shaped by the result you want. We do not scrape unknown pre-1990 ceilings without clearance.
How long does popcorn ceiling removal take in a Calgary home?
A standard main floor in a Calgary bungalow or bi-level — two or three rooms — is typically a one-to-two day job. A Mount Pleasant job with vaults, an open main floor or a re-texture step runs a bit longer. Timeline expectations are set straight at the Mount Pleasant quote.
Can you leave the ceiling perfectly smooth after removal?
Yes. Full drying between skim and sand keeps Mount Pleasant ceilings flat. In Calgary homes with new LED lighting or open-concept spaces where the ceiling is always in view, smooth Level 5 finish is the right choice. If you prefer knockdown re-texture — which hides minor imperfections and matches most post-1995 Calgary new builds — we do that too.
How messy is popcorn ceiling removal in Calgary?
It produces a lot of fine dust when done without containment. We mask doorways with poly sheeting, cover all floors and protect fixtures before we scrape a single line. Most Calgary homeowners tell us they expected a much bigger mess and were surprised at how clean we kept the house.
