No. Popcorn (stipple) is a sprayed granular material that usually wet-scrapes off. Knockdown is troweled joint compound bonded to the ceiling, so it is sanded and skimmed flat instead of scraped.

Yes — the goal is a flat, smooth, modern ceiling. After sanding the texture down we skim coat, sand smooth and check under light so it reads as a clean smooth ceiling, ready for paint.

Replacing poly-B pipe is licensed plumbing work. It is not something we do, and it is not something we would advise on — that is a conversation for a licensed plumber. What we do is the other half of the job: the cut-outs the re-pipe leaves in your walls and ceilings, boarded, taped, textured to match and left paint-ready.

Poly-B drywall repair is priced off the openings, not the floor area — how many cut-outs the plumber left, where they are, and what texture has to be matched. A run of small wall openings behind a vanity is a different job from a ceiling opened along a main line. We look at the actual openings after the re-pipe and give you one fixed written price before we start. We price the drywall side only; the pipe replacement is your plumber’s quote, not ours.

How many cut-outs does a full poly-B re-pipe typically leave in a Calgary home?

It depends on the home layout and how the plumber ran the new lines. A one-storey Calgary bungalow from the 1970s typically has 15 to 25 wall and ceiling cut-outs. Yes, and ceilings are the bigger half of most poly-B calls, because the main lines usually run overhead. A ceiling is also the harder surface to hide a patch on — stipple and knockdown show a repair far more than a flat wall does — so we feather well past each opening and match the existing texture before it is primed.

Yes. Texture matching is part of every poly-B re-pipe drywall job we do in Calgary. Whether the home has knockdown ceilings, smooth walls or a heavier stipple pattern, we match it so the patches are invisible under paint. This is not an add-on — it is standard.

Do I need to wait for plumbing inspections before you repair the drywall?

Yes. We do not close any wall or ceiling cut-out until the plumbing re-pipe is done and inspections have passed. Closing drywall before inspection forces the inspector to cut back in — you pay for the repair twice. We coordinate with your plumber and schedule to follow inspections directly.

Does spray foam insulation have to be covered with drywall in Calgary?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Foam plastic insulation cannot be left exposed to the inside of a building. Under the National Building Code — Alberta Edition, Article 9.10.17.10, “Protection of Foamed Plastic”, it has to be separated from the occupied space by a thermal barrier, and in a house that is almost always 12.7 mm (half-inch) gypsum board. Ordinary drywall. That is the part most people are never told about when they get foam quoted, and it is the part we do.

Do you spray the foam as well as board over it?

No. We do not spray foam and we do not quote it — we are a mudding and taping crew. The foam is applied by a spray foam insulation contractor — the Calgary work we see most often is done by Spray Foam Insulation Alberta — and we are the crew that boards, tapes and finishes over it afterwards so the wall meets the thermal-barrier requirement and is ready for paint.

Can the foam and the drywall be booked as one job?

They are two trades and they have to run in order: foam goes in first, any inspection happens while the assembly is still open, and only then do we board over it. If you tell us the foam date when you book, we schedule to follow it so the walls are not sitting open longer than they need to be. Should I use spray foam or batt insulation before drywall?

Accepted Answer

Foam earns its place where a wall is awkward to seal any other way — rim joists, cantilevers, cathedral ceilings, the cold corner nobody could ever fix — because it insulates and air-seals in one step. It is not the right answer everywhere. An open stud wall that is simply going to be boarded over is usually better and far more cheaply served by batt insulation, and a straightforward attic top-up is usually blown-in. We install both, and we will tell you when foam is more than the job needs.

What thickness of drywall goes over spray foam?

Accepted Answer

In a house, 12.7 mm — half-inch gypsum board — is the thermal barrier the code asks for over foamed plastic. Where the same assembly is also a fire separation, such as a garage ceiling under living space or a legal suite, that becomes a fire-rated Type X assembly instead, and we board it to that spec. We confirm which one applies at the quote rather than guessing from the foam alone.

Do I need to fix the leak before you repair the drywall?

Yes. The source must be confirmed repaired and the cavity must test dry before we close the repair. We will not board over a wet or active source — it would fail. If you are unsure whether the source is fully addressed, we will check when we assess the job and advise you directly.
