Drywall Calculator Questions

How much drywall do I need for a room?

Measure the room length, width and ceiling height. Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × height; add length × width if you're drywalling the ceiling too. Divide the total square footage by the sheet size (32 sq ft for 4×8, 48 sq ft for 4×12), add about 10% for waste, and round up. The calculator above does this for you.

How many sheets of drywall for a 12x12 room?

A 12×12 room with 8 ft ceilings has about 384 sq ft of wall. With 4×8 sheets (32 sq ft) plus 10% waste that's roughly 14 sheets for the walls, or about 18 if you include the ceiling. Enter your exact numbers above for a precise estimate.

How much joint compound and tape do I need?

A rough rule is about 1 gallon of all-purpose compound and roughly 0.75 linear feet of tape per square foot of drywall for a standard three-coat finish. The calculator estimates both from your room size.

Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 drywall sheets?

4×12 sheets cover more area with fewer seams — a smoother finish and less taping — but they're heavier and harder to handle in tight spaces. 4×8 sheets are easier for DIY and small rooms. The calculator supports both.
