Does my SW Calgary home need an asbestos test before ceiling removal?

If your SW Calgary home was built before 1990, we recommend a bulk-sample asbestos test before removal. In SW Calgary, texture sprayed before the early 1990s may contain asbestos in its binder. A single sample from a certified Calgary lab costs under $100 and takes a few business days. In SW Calgary we advise on the approach and build the schedule around the finish you choose. Unknown pre-1990 texture in SW Calgary does not get scraped without confirmation.

How long does popcorn ceiling removal take in an SW Calgary home?

A standard main floor in an SW Calgary home — two or three rooms — is typically a one-to-two day job. In SW Calgary, vaults, open-concept spaces and re-texture jobs add some time. We give SW Calgary homeowners an honest timeline at the quote.

Can you leave the ceiling smooth after removal in SW Calgary?

Yes. Skim, full dry, flat sand — the SW Calgary finishing sequence. In SW Calgary homes with new LED lighting or open-concept spaces where the ceiling is always in view, smooth Level 5 finish is the right choice. Knockdown re-texture is on the SW Calgary menu as well — and we match adjoining patterns.

How do you control the dust during popcorn ceiling removal in SW Calgary?

Before any SW Calgary scraping: poly-sheeted doorways, drop-sheeted floors, protected fixtures. Popcorn scraping creates a significant amount of fine dust when done without containment — we contain it, and we clean up the room before we leave your SW Calgary home.

Popcorn ceilings scraped flat and paint-ready in SW Calgary

Stipple texture dates SW Calgary interiors fast. Whether you have the heavy stipple common in older SW Calgary homes or a lighter texture from the 1990s, we scrape it down, skim the ceiling flat, sand smooth and leave it paint-ready. SW Calgary spans from 1950s-60s inner-city neighbourhoods like Lakeview and Glendale through premium 2000s-2010s builds in Aspen Woods and West Springs. Ceiling removal scope ranges from heavy pre-1990 stipple to smooth-ceiling upgrades in high-end newer builds. Dust containment, covered floors and a full cleanup — standard on every SW Calgary job. We cover SW Calgary, Aspen Woods, West Springs and Lakeview and the surrounding area, 7 days a week.

What affects the cost of popcorn ceiling removal in SW Calgary?

Ceiling area, height and access in SW Calgary homes

The main cost drivers for popcorn ceiling removal in SW Calgary are total ceiling area, ceiling height (standard 8-foot vs. vaulted or cathedral ceilings take more setup), how many skim and sanding coats the surface needs to come fully flat, and whether you want smooth or knockdown re-texture. A straightforward main-floor removal in an SW Calgary home typically takes one to two days. An open-concept space with a vaulted section takes longer to set up and skim.

Pre-1990 ceilings in SW Calgary — asbestos testing before removal

In SW Calgary, texture sprayed before the early 1990s may contain asbestos in its binder. If your SW Calgary home was built before 1990, we recommend a bulk-sample asbestos test before any ceiling removal — a single sample costs under $100 and takes a few business days at a certified Calgary lab. Expect clear process advice in SW Calgary and scheduling built around your chosen finish. Unknown pre-1990 texture in SW Calgary does not get scraped without confirmation.

Our popcorn ceiling removal process in SW Calgary, step by step

Full dust containment before we scrape a single line in SW Calgary

Scraping popcorn is dusty work. Before we touch the ceiling in any SW Calgary home, we mask doorways with poly sheeting, cover the floor with drop sheets and protect all light fixtures. Most SW Calgary homeowners do not fully appreciate how much fine dust a scrape job generates until they have been through one done without proper containment. We contain it from the start and clean up before we leave.

Skim coat, drying time and the sanding pass on SW Calgary ceilings

Once the ceiling is scraped clean, we repair any cracks or seams that have opened up. Then the SW Calgary ceiling gets its skim coat: a thin spread of compound that levels the residual roughness from scraping. It needs to dry completely before sanding. Most skim-coat failures in SW Calgary — cracking, texture showing through paint — trace back to skipped drying time. We do not rush it. The final sanding pass is done with a pole sander and leaves the SW Calgary ceiling dead flat and ready for primer.

Smooth ceiling vs. knockdown re-texture in SW Calgary homes

Which finish works best after removal in SW Calgary?

After scraping the popcorn in an SW Calgary home, you have two standard options: smooth Level 5 finish or knockdown re-texture. For SW Calgary homes, smooth is the high-end option: gorgeous under light, room-expanding, and unforgiving of a sloppy skim. It works especially well in SW Calgary homes being renovated with new LED lighting and open-plan layouts where the ceiling is always visible.

Knockdown re-texture in SW Calgary — a cleaner modern look, faster to achieve

Knockdown gives a lightly textured ceiling — flattened random peaks, the standard in most 2000s and 2010s SW Calgary new builds. For SW Calgary ceilings, knockdown masks minor flaws better than a smooth finish and takes paint nicely. For SW Calgary ceilings it is quicker to achieve than perfect smooth while still looking fresh next to old stipple. Want continuity across SW Calgary rooms? The knockdown pattern is matched to what surrounds it.

Popcorn ceiling removal work we do in SW Calgary

Pre-1990 stipple removal in established SW Calgary communities

Established SW Calgary — Lakeview, Glendale, Haysboro, Glamorgan, Shawnessy — has some of the oldest housing stock in Calgary. Stipple in these homes predates the early 1990s and asbestos testing before removal is strongly recommended. We advise on the test, schedule the job around the result and leave the ceiling skim-flat and paint-ready.

Premium smooth ceiling finishing in newer SW Calgary homes

Aspen Woods, West Springs and Springbank Hill homes are higher-end builds where the ceiling finish is expected to match the quality of the rest of the renovation. After a pot light install or a main-floor update, we skim the ceiling to Level 5 — flat under any lighting angle, paint-ready and consistent across the whole plane.

Why SW Calgary homeowners choose Emplastrum for popcorn ceiling removal

Taping and mudding is the trade we built on — SW Calgary ceiling finishes prove it

For many general contractors the skim coat is an afterthought once the scraping is done. On SW Calgary ceilings, we treat the skim, sand and finish as the job itself. We are a mudding and taping specialist and a perfectly flat, paint-ready ceiling is the standard we hold every SW Calgary job to. The same skill that produces a Level 4 wall finish is what gives our popcorn removal skim coats the flat, consistent finish that holds up under new lighting.
