Does my Riversong home need an asbestos test before ceiling removal?

If your Riversong home was built before 1990, we recommend a bulk-sample asbestos test before removal. Pre-1990s stipple on Riversong ceilings sometimes contains asbestos-bearing binder compound. A single sample from a certified Calgary lab costs under $100 and takes a few business days. You get straight advice in Riversong and a schedule set around the outcome. No confirmation, no scrape — the rule for pre-1990 Riversong ceilings.

How long does popcorn ceiling removal take in a Riversong home?

A standard main floor in a Riversong home — two or three rooms — is typically a one-to-two day job. Expect a slightly longer Riversong timeline for vaulted or open-concept ceilings, or when re-texturing. The on-site visit in Riversong includes a realistic schedule estimate.

Can you leave the ceiling smooth after removal in Riversong?

Yes. The Riversong ceiling gets skimmed, properly dried and sanded flat. In Riversong homes with new LED lighting or open-concept spaces where the ceiling is always in view, smooth Level 5 finish is the right choice. If knockdown is your choice in Riversong, we apply it and blend it to the neighbouring ceilings.

How do you control the dust during popcorn ceiling removal in Riversong?

In Riversong we seal doorways with poly, blanket the floors and shield the fixtures before starting overhead. Popcorn scraping creates a significant amount of fine dust when done without containment — we contain it, and we clean up the room before we leave your Riversong home.

Popcorn ceilings scraped flat and paint-ready in Riversong

Nothing ages a Riversong room like a popcorn ceiling. Whether you have the heavy stipple common in older Riversong homes or a lighter texture from the 1990s, we scrape it down, skim the ceiling flat, sand smooth and leave it paint-ready. Riversong is a newer Cochrane community — no original stipple. Smooth ceiling upgrades and pot light patching are the ceiling calls here. We contain the dust in Riversong, protect the floors, and leave the room clean. We cover Riversong, Fireside, Sunset Ridge and West Valley and the surrounding area, 7 days a week.

What affects the cost of popcorn ceiling removal in Riversong?

Ceiling area, height and access in Riversong homes

The main cost drivers for popcorn ceiling removal in Riversong are total ceiling area, ceiling height (standard 8-foot vs. vaulted or cathedral ceilings take more setup), how many skim and sanding coats the surface needs to come fully flat, and whether you want smooth or knockdown re-texture. A straightforward main-floor removal in a Riversong home typically takes one to two days. An open-concept space with a vaulted section takes longer to set up and skim.

Pre-1990 ceilings in Riversong — asbestos testing before removal

Pre-1990s stipple on Riversong ceilings sometimes contains asbestos-bearing binder compound. If your Riversong home was built before 1990, we recommend a bulk-sample asbestos test before any ceiling removal — a single sample costs under $100 and takes a few business days at a certified Calgary lab. We advise Riversong homeowners on the approach and set the schedule around the outcome. No confirmation, no scrape — the rule for pre-1990 Riversong ceilings. Housing in Riversong is mixed, which is why we look before we quote rather than after.

Our popcorn ceiling removal process in Riversong, step by step

Full dust containment before we scrape a single line in Riversong

Scraping popcorn is dusty work. Before we touch the ceiling in any Riversong home, we mask doorways with poly sheeting, cover the floor with drop sheets and protect all light fixtures. Most Riversong homeowners do not fully appreciate how much fine dust a scrape job generates until they have been through one done without proper containment. We contain it from the start and clean up before we leave.

Skim coat, drying time and the sanding pass on Riversong ceilings

Once the ceiling is scraped clean, we repair any cracks or seams that have opened up. The skim coat follows — compound floated thin over the full Riversong ceiling to bury the scrape marks. It needs to dry completely before sanding. Skip the drying window and a Riversong skim coat will crack or show through the paint. We do not rush it. The final sanding pass is done with a pole sander and leaves the Riversong ceiling dead flat and ready for primer.

Smooth ceiling vs. knockdown re-texture in Riversong homes

Which finish works best after removal in Riversong?

After scraping the popcorn in a Riversong home, you have two standard options: smooth Level 5 finish or knockdown re-texture. A smooth ceiling makes a Riversong room feel bigger and handles light beautifully — provided the skim and sanding are immaculate. It works especially well in Riversong homes being renovated with new LED lighting and open-plan layouts where the ceiling is always visible.

Knockdown re-texture in Riversong — a cleaner modern look, faster to achieve

Knockdown gives a lightly textured ceiling — flattened random peaks, the standard in most 2000s and 2010s Riversong new builds. It forgives minor imperfections more than smooth does — and Riversong repaints go on cleanly. Compared with the original stipple, a Riversong knockdown looks modern and clean — and takes less time than dead-smooth. Adjoining Riversong surfaces set the pattern — we blend the new knockdown to match. Riversong spans a range of build eras, so what is behind the wall differs street to street.

Popcorn ceiling removal work we do in Riversong

Smooth ceiling upgrades in Riversong homes for LED lighting and open plans

Riversong homes from the 2010s and early 2020s rarely have original popcorn or stipple, but textured or lightly sprayed ceilings are still common — and they clash with the clean look homeowners want under new LED pot lights or in open-concept main floors. We skim the existing texture flat, sand smooth and leave the Riversong ceiling at a Level 5 finish that holds up under any lighting angle.

Pot light patch finishing and ceiling skim work in Riversong

After an electrician installs pot lights in a Riversong home, the ceiling needs a skim pass to blend the patches and unify the surface. If the rest of the ceiling has any light texture, we skim the whole plane flat at the same time so the result looks intentional — not patched. We work with electricians and painters in Riversong regularly and know how to time the job so everyone can move through without waiting.

Why Riversong homeowners choose Emplastrum for popcorn ceiling removal

Our core trade is mudding and taping — and Riversong ceilings show it

General drywall crews often treat the post-scrape skim as a rushed extra. The skim coat, the sanding and the final finish — that is the entire Riversong job to us. We are a mudding and taping specialist and a perfectly flat, paint-ready ceiling is the standard we hold every Riversong job to. The same skill that produces a Level 4 wall finish is what gives our popcorn removal skim coats the flat, consistent finish that holds up under new lighting.
