What affects the cost of attic insulation in Calgary?

Area, depth and access

Attic insulation cost in Calgary depends on the square footage of the attic, how much depth is being added, and how easy the attic is to get into and move around in. A low-pitch attic with a small hatch takes longer than a tall one with good access.

Depth is the honest measure

The only reliable way to know is to measure the depth in several places, because attic insulation is rarely even. If it is level with or below the ceiling joists, there is usually room to improve it.

Insulation that is wet or frosted is a sign of something else going on, usually air leaking up from the house. Adding depth on top of it hides the problem instead of fixing it, so we report what we find and why rather than blowing over it.

Ice dams

Ice dams are usually driven by heat escaping into the attic. Insulation and air sealing are the usual place to start, but nobody can promise you a result on a roof they have not looked at.

How do I know if I have enough attic insulation in Calgary?
Measure the depth in a few places rather than one. If it is level with or below the ceiling joists, or it varies a lot across the attic, there is usually room to improve it. We measure it properly on the visit and tell you either way.
Can you add insulation on top of what is already in my Calgary attic?
Usually yes — if the existing material is dry and in reasonable condition, adding depth on top is the normal approach and it is the cheaper option. If what is there is wet, damaged or unidentified, we deal with that first.
Will topping up my attic help with ice dams in Calgary?
