Painting in Calgary — and how to pick the right one

Most painting quotes in Calgary go wrong in the same place: the wall was never properly prepared. Paint does not hide a bad patch, a lifted seam or a ceiling that was scraped and left rough — it highlights all three under the first north-facing window it meets. Emplastrum came at painting from the drywall side, which means the preparation is the part we are strictest about. We work across every quadrant of the city, from the older inner-city streets where walls need patching and skim-coating before a roller ever touches them, to new-build subdivisions where the job is filling builder deficiencies and priming bare board. Below are the six painting services we run in Calgary, and the honest answer to which one you actually need.

Which painting service you actually need

If the walls are sound and you are changing colour, that is interior painting. If a ceiling was scraped, patched or water-stained, it is ceiling painting and the finish matters more than the colour. If you are at the end of a renovation, renovation painting is the one that accounts for new board, new trim and old walls meeting in the same room. If something is cracked, dented or patched, drywall repair and painting keeps the repair and the coat with one crew, so nobody argues about whose patch shows through. Not sure? Describe the room and we will tell you which it is.

Why one crew for drywall and paint

The most common callback in this trade is a visible patch under paint. It happens when the drywall trade and the painting trade are two different companies: the patch is signed off flat, the paint goes on, and the seam telegraphs in side light. When the same crew does both, the person patching knows exactly what the paint will do to it, and there is one number to call if it is not right. That is the whole argument for hiring the two together, and it is why we do them together.

Preparation is the quote

Two Calgary homes, the same square footage, can differ by days of labour before any paint is opened. An inner-city home with plaster cracks and thirty years of touch-ups needs patching, sanding and priming. A three-year-old build in the far northwest needs nail holes filled and bare patched board primed so it does not flash. When a painting quote comes in far below the others, preparation is almost always the line that was quietly removed.

Painting by Calgary quadrant

Painting crews work quadrant by quadrant so travel does not end up in your price. Each quadrant page lists the communities we cover and the housing stock that shapes the prep in that part of the city. Painting in NW Calgary and painting in SW Calgary carry more established homes and more patching before primer; painting in NE Calgary and painting in SE Calgary lean newer, with more builder-grade repaint and basement development work. Pick your quadrant for the communities we cover there.

Paint after drywall, not the other way around

If a project involves both, drywall comes first and paint follows — boarding, taping, finishing to the level the room needs, then primer, then colour. Painting a wall that still has drywall work pending means masking, protecting and re-prepping the same room twice. Booking them together in the right order is cheaper than booking them separately in the wrong one.

Free quote

The quote happens at your Calgary home, in front of the work. We measure, we look at what is behind the wall where it matters, and the price we give is the price.

We book around you, not around our week. When the day comes the Calgary crew is there at the agreed time, loaded for the drywall.

Painters Calgary: your questions answered

Do you paint as well as do drywall?
Yes — the same crew boards, tapes, finishes and paints. That is the point: no handoff between the trade that patches the wall and the trade that coats it.
Can you paint just one room?
Yes. Single rooms, a hallway, a ceiling on its own, or a whole home. Small jobs get the same on-site quote as large ones.
Do you paint ceilings after removing popcorn texture?
Yes, and that is the right order — the ceiling is scraped, repaired and finished flat, then primed and painted in the same visit rather than left for someone else.
How many coats will my walls need?
It depends on the colour change and the condition of the wall. A similar shade over sound paint is usually two coats. A dark-to-light change, or aged and patched walls, often needs three. We tell you which before we start, not after.
Which parts of Calgary do you cover?
All four quadrants — NW, NE, SW and SE — plus Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere and Okotoks. Calgary is our home base.
